Summary

The city of Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire, the centre of the universe. The main palaces and temples dedicated to the sun god were located there. From Cusco, the qhapac ñan or royal roads departed in four main directions towards the regions of the empire: Collasuyo, Antisuyo, Chinchaysuyo and Contisuyo. Cusco was considered a sacred city, worthy of important people.

In the 16th century, the city of Cusco was invaded by the Spanish, who looted its temples and palaces and built solid colonial churches in their places. Today, after more than five hundred years, the Inca and Spanish buildings remain intact, decorating the beautiful Inca capital city, Cusco, considered one of the best tourist destinations on the planet.

There are many tourist attractions in the city of Cusco, perhaps some of the most important are: the Cathedral, the Coricancha temple, the Sacsayhuamán Fortress, as well as the Inca sites of Qenqo, Pucapucara and Tambomachay. All of these can be visited through the popular Cusco City Tour.

The Cusco City Tour includes a visit to these Inca temples, as well as a tour of the city’s historic streets. Cusco is considered a museum city.
