Summary

Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire, where the main temples and palaces were built. A few kilometres away, the Incas built important citadels and agricultural centres that formed important cities. Today, after more than five hundred years, this whole area stands out for its beautiful green fields, its towns with a lot of tradition and Inca archaeological sites. This area is called the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is made up of several villages where the Incas built terraces, roads, citadels and temples. The most important archaeological sites are the Inca city of Pisac, the Ollantaytambo Fortress and the Chinchero Palace. Today, all these places are part of the 1-day tour to the Sacred Valley of the Incas (from 8 am to 6 pm on average).

Pisac is the first destination on the tour to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. It is located just 1 hour by road from the city of Cusco. It was an important city with enormous agricultural terraces, formidable stone constructions, enclosures for the population and even a huge Inca cemetery (plundered by the Spanish in the 16th century). Stone constructions such as the Intihuatana, the sundial, stand out.

The town and archaeological site of Ollantaytambo is 1 hour and 30 minutes from the Inca citadel of Pisac. The town is known as the ‘last Inca town’ because it has an urban structure that has been preserved since the Inca Empire. It also stands out for its impressive archaeological site that served as a temple and enclosure for the Inca elite. It is notable for buildings such as the Temple of the Sun, the Enclosure of the 10 Niches or the Baths of the Ñusta.

An hour from Ollantaytambo, on the way back to the city of Cusco, you arrive at the town and archaeological site of Chinchero. Here the emperor Túpac Yupanqui ordered the construction of his resting palace. However, in the 16th century, it was destroyed by the Spanish who built a colonial church in its place. Even so, in Chinchero you can still see its Inca roads (qhapac ñan) and enormous agricultural terraces.

The classic tour through the Sacred Valley of the Incas also includes a stop in the town of Urubamba where you can enjoy a delicious buffet lunch. The private tour guide service is highly recommended for a well-informed tour full of beautiful landscapes. The guide is a professional with extensive knowledge of the history and traditions of Cusco and the Sacred Valley. It is a highly recommended adventure!

After taking the beautiful photos, the trip continues for an average of 1 hour until arriving at the archaeological site of Pisac. There, the visitor must pay for the tickets or request them in advance.
