Summary

Machu Picchu is located in the Andean geography of the Vilcanota mountain range in the Cusco region in southern Peru. Due to its location in the mountainous jungle of the Urubamba Valley, it is surrounded by important mountains, where peaks such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain stand out, which gave its name to its Inca citadel.

When visiting Machu Picchu, you can take hiking trails to the peaks of these mountains, as well as to Huchuy Picchu, a slope of Huayna Picchu, which offers a simpler and easier route to complete. The other hiking trails in Machu Picchu are those that lead to Intipunku (Sun Gate), the Inca Bridge and the Temple of the Moon (the Great Cavern).

However, among all the hiking routes, the one that is considered the most popular is undoubtedly the hike to the top of Huayna Picchu. This summit offers Inca paths made of stone and close to challenging views downhill. The hike is approximately 2 kilometers uphill. It is only suitable for tourists over 18 years old.

The Huayna Picchu hiking route is available all year round. This hike is optional with the company of a tour guide. However, due to the Inca constructions, the beautiful landscapes, as well as the abundant flora and fauna of the place; an excellent option is to do this hike with the company of a guide.

The tour guide service on Huayna Picchu Mountain can be done at two available times: entry to Machu Picchu from 6 am (entry to Huayna Picchu until 8 am) and entry to Machu Picchu from 8 am (entry to Huayna Picchu until 10 am). In both cases, the visitor has almost 2 free hours to take the tour without a guide through circuit 3 in Machu Picchu.

The tour guide will wait for the tourist at the entrance gate to Huayna Picchu at the agreed time. He will then accompany the tourist on the complete and safe route through Huayna Picchu. This hike takes a maximum of 4 hours on its round trip. It is a memorable hike, with great landscapes, lots of history and adventure. Definitely, the company of a guide is an excellent option for a safe experience.

Itinerary:

The private service on Huayna Picchu mountain begins with the visitor being picked up at the Aguas Calientes train station. The meeting is at the station exit door by the same tour guide or an assistant at the previously agreed time. If the tourist is staying the night before in a hotel in the town of Aguas Calientes, then the guide will offer a briefing or informative talk the night before.
The visitor, with the help of his guide or an assistant, will board one of the Consettur buses (not included in the service), which will take him from Aguas Calientes to the entrance gate of Machu Picchu. The trip takes only 30 minutes.
At the entrance to Machu Picchu, visitors will enter with the ‘Machu Picchu with Huayna Picchu’ ticket in hand. This ticket allows two entry times to Machu Picchu: at 6 am and at 9 am.
In Machu Picchu, tourists can take an almost 2-hour unguided tour through circuit 3. This circuit allows visitors to see the temples in the lower part of the citadel, such as: the Royal Tomb, the House of the Inca, the Temple of the Sun, the Three Doors and the Sacred Rock. Just a few steps from this Inca construction is the entrance to Huayna Picchu. There, visitors will meet their private tour guide to begin the hiking route.
The tour of Huayna Picchu Mountain is safer with the company of a tour guide. The guide will also provide a historical explanation of the Inca constructions along the route. The guide also has knowledge of the abundant flora and fauna of the place.
The hike takes 1 to 2 hours, depending on the visitor’s physical condition. The route offers beautiful landscapes, but also challenging sections. The guide will accompany you at all times.
After hiking to the top of Huayna Picchu and taking the best photos of the place, it is time to make the descent. The guide will help you navigate the difficult paths. The descent route takes 1 hour 30 minutes on average.
After visiting Huayna Picchu, your guide will accompany you through the rest of the Inca buildings included in Machu Picchu (circuit 3). These are: the Temple of the Condor, the Sacred Springs and the agricultural area where you can get a postcard photo of Machu Picchu. Finally, your guide will help you board the bus back to the town of Aguas Calientes.

The Stairs of Death and the Cave on Huayna Picchu – Perhaps the two most difficult sections of the Huayna Picchu mountain hike are the ‘Stairs of Death’ and the ‘Cave’. The first is a section of steep stone steps that require the use of safety ropes to keep your balance. Its name is due to the difficulty of overcoming these sections and not because someone lost their life there. The second section is on the way down where you must enter a very narrow cave to continue with the route. This section is not difficult if you have a certain amount of flexibility. However, very tall or bulky visitors must duck their heads to get through this very short but uncomfortable section. Despite both obstacles, the Huayna Picchu hike is a very safe and fun adventure, full of beautiful landscapes and a lot of history.
